The Shadow of Trump’s Presidency Grows Longer

For those that imagined the consequences of a Trump presidency would at least be temporary, feelings of hope have all but evaporated. As each of Trump’s appointments is announced, a dark shadow creeps further over world stability and hard fought liberal values.

This week it is Israel’s turn to feel the chill. A hardliner that wants to legalise and accelerate settlements and has little interest in a long-term peace settlement has been chosen as US ambassador to Israel. With David Friedman, we are destined to see an escalation of tensions,  inflamed by Israeli cabinet hardliners emboldened by Friedman’s appointment. Decades of failed diplomacy may not have exactly solved the Arab-Israeli conflict, but at least future peace remained a distant possibility.
